Based on the chassis of the Renault 18, the Fuego was designed to be a cheap sports coupe to compete with the likes of the Ford Capri and the Volkswagen Scirocco. It was available in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated versions. In Europe, it was the best-selling coupe from 1980 to 1982.

Both Fuego and Fuego Turbo models relied on front discs and rear drums to scrub off speed. The styling proved to be a selling point for European consumers, who made the Fuego the best-selling coupe in Europe from 1980 to 1982.

interior ELECTRIFYING OPTIONS The Turbo version of Renault Fuego was boosted by a turbocharged engine delivering 132 hp (pretty good going!). In addition, Renault Fuego Turbo had an impressive line-up of options (for its time): central locking, front electric windows and leather upholstery featuring a diamond logo on the front seats. Pretty classy!

The Fuego arrived in the US in 1982, in both conventional and then also as a turbo model. The naturally-aspirated 1647 cc SOHC four made 81 hp; the 1566 cc turbo version cranked out a mighty 107 hp. The Fuego's advertising invited one to enter "the turbo zone" and share the same technology that made Renault's F1 turbocharged racers so.

( first posted 5/9/2013 ) The Fuego has become almost mythical in the US. It seems to typify all of the issues that plagued Renault in its final years in the US: attractive if quirky designs that didn't stand up to the (brutal) test of time that typical American buyers subjected their cars to.

The interior looks similarly nice and this one comes with a CB radio. I can't imagine anyone actually using it but it's unique none the less. The back seat, cargo area, and headliner all look like new, and the underside looks rock solid. US buyers could nab up a Fuego at their neighborhood AMC dealer in 1982 and until 1985.

The interior, though, nice! Red leather, it's hard to beat that for me and this thing looks perfect. There were a variety of engines available in the Fuego starting with a 1.6 naturally-aspirated four-cylinder and a version with a turbo and 107 hp.

The interior of the Fuego included some quirky design features, and the most obvious of these is the front seats. When the car was released, these seats were like nothing that had ever been seen previously in a production car. The leather on these seats appears to have held up well over the years, but the driver's seat is showing some wear.
